Sweet Baharat Spice Blend

Sep 10, 2025
Sweet Baharat Spice Blend

I first discovered baharat while working at Safta in Denver, where we used it often—most memorably in the brown sugar layer of our morning coffee cake. Baharat is a Middle Eastern spice blend with many regional variations, often built around cinnamon and black pepper. The savory versions typically include cumin (you can find my savory baharat recipe here: Baharat Spice Blend), but the sweet version is where my heart lies. It’s cozy, aromatic, and absolutely perfect for fall. I love using it anywhere I’d normally reach for cinnamon: folded into pancake batter, sprinkled over oatmeal, or baked into apple pie. It’s one of those pantry blends that makes everything taste instantly more special.

This warm, fragrant Middle Eastern spice mix leans on cinnamon and black pepper, with layers of cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. Perfect for fall baking and cozy breakfasts.

Ingredients

½ cup (47 g) ground cinnamon
3 tablespoons (19 g) ground black pepper
1 tablespoon (12 g) ground allspice
2 teaspoons (4 g) ground cardamom
2 teaspoons (5 g) freshly grated nutmeg
1 teaspoon (2 g) ground ginger
1 teaspoon (2 g) ground cloves

Instructions
Combine all the spices in a bowl and whisk until evenly blended. Transfer to an airtight jar and store in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.

Ways to Use It
Sprinkle into oatmeal or yogurt for a fragrant twist.
Swap it in for cinnamon in cinnamon rolls or apple pie.
Dust over roasted apples or pears.
Stir into pancake or waffle batter for cozy, spiced mornings.
Blend into apple butter, granola, or coffee cake for layered flavor.
