Cool Reds: Elevate Your Summer Wine Game

Jun 10, 2025

We all know summer is rosé season, but I’m here to let you in on a little secret: red wine wants in. Not the heavy stuff. I’m talking about light, juicy, low-tannin reds that come alive when served cool—not ice cold, just chill enough to take the edge off. These bottles are bright, snackable, and totally built for everything from grilled meats to market tomatoes eaten straight out of the bowl.

If you're still thinking red wine is only for winter braises and fireplaces, let this be your summer reset. Here are my favorite chillable reds to keep on hand for backyard hangs, porch dinners, or just because it’s Tuesday and 85 degrees outside.

Gamay
Gamay is the blueprint. Think Beaujolais—especially the cru stuff like Morgon or Fleurie—piled high with red fruit, silky texture, and a whisper of earthy funk. Toss it in the fridge for 20 minutes, pop it open with roast chicken, grilled veggies, or just a good salty chip. It's got that “how is this so good?” energy.

Pinot Noir
You already know her. Pinot is classy, crowd-pleasing, and a dream when chilled. Look for bottles from cool-climate spots like Oregon or Burgundy if you want that soft, earthy balance with all the cherry cola vibes. Pro tip: lighter Pinots love grilled salmon or mushrooms.

Frappato
This Sicilian beauty is bright, floral, and a little wild. It’s got raspberry for days, soft tannins, and a touch of herbaceous sass. If you’re eating anchovy-dressed greens or anything with a tomato base, Frappato’s your flirty, Mediterranean plus-one.

Grenache (especially from Spain)
Spanish Garnacha brings the sunshine. Lush, fruity, but still light on its feet—especially when it’s unoaked. Look for bottles from places like Navarra or Sierra de Gredos. It's spicy, red-fruited, and a dream with grilled everything. Drink this one when you’re having people over and not trying too hard.

Trousseau
Trousseau is a little under-the-radar but completely worth knowing. From France’s Jura (and some super cool winemakers in California), it’s pale, punchy, and kinda wild in a natural-wine way. Chill it and pour it for the friend who says they don’t like red wine. You might convert them.

Bonus Round: Reds That Love a Chill

Zweigelt (Austria)
Bright, peppery, and criminally easy to drink. Austria’s everyday red has that sour cherry zip and minimal fuss. Perfect for grilled sausages or a snack plate situation.

Mencia (Spain)
From the misty mountains of Bierzo and Ribeira Sacra, Mencia brings minerality, wild herbs, and red berry charm. Think of it like Pinot’s broody cousin who spent a semester abroad. Serve with anything smoky or garlicky.

Schiava (Alto Adige, Italy)
Barely-there color, roses on the nose, and strawberry on the tongue. This is rosé-adjacent red for the picnic crowd. It’s light, lovely, and made for hot afternoons with a wedge of cheese.

Poulsard (Jura, France)
This one’s for the natural wine heads. Pale, crunchy, and often a little cloudy, Poulsard brings tart berries and forest vibes. Throw it in the cooler and serve it with grilled halloumi or lentil salad.

Lambrusco (dry styles only)
Yes, sparkling red! Dry Lambrusco is refreshing, berry-forward, and a touch fizzy—which makes it perfect with salty meats, grilled pizza, or honestly, chips and dip. Don’t knock it ‘til you try it.

So yeah—red wine doesn’t have to hibernate until fall. Stock your fridge with a few of these bottles, serve them a little cooler than room temp, and keep your summer sipping interesting. Because not all red wines want to be taken too seriously… and honestly, neither do we.
